Teacher Loan Forgiveness or PSLF? Compare Service Credit First
Compare teaching-service overlap before choosing forgiveness.
Before accepting Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF), compare its effect on Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). The same teaching period cannot provide benefits under both.
TLF requires five complete, consecutive academic years of qualifying full-time teaching and other conditions. Eligible teachers may receive up to $5,000 or $17,500, depending on qualifications. PSLF forgives remaining eligible Direct Loan debt after 120 qualifying payments and requires qualifying employment.
A stipulated payment-count comparison
Assume 72 otherwise qualifying PSLF payments: 60 within the teaching period proposed for TLF, plus 12 outside it. Exclude historical waiver or adjustment cases.
- Without using that period for TLF: 120 − 72 = 48 payments remain.
- If TLF is received for that period: exclude those 60; 120 − 12 = 108 remain.
Illustrative arithmetic, not an administrative recalculation or eligibility finding. Academic years do not automatically equal qualifying-payment months.
Compare the decision, not just the headline benefit
Prepare two written scenarios before requesting the teacher benefit. For each, list the benefit you could actually qualify for, projected payments until payoff or forgiveness, the balance expected to remain, and the employment assumptions needed.
Test what changes if you leave qualifying employment earlier or your required payments rise. A larger potential cancellation is not automatically the lower-cost or more feasible path.
Take the overlapping service dates and both scenarios to your federal loan servicer. Ask which months and loans are affected before deciding. If your record includes prior adjustments, request an explanation of that record rather than subtracting months yourself.
