Extra Lease Deposits: Compare Savings With Cash Tied Up
Separate payment savings from the refund of your own deposit.
Extra lease security deposits can lower payments, but the money is unavailable for other needs while held. Compare the payment saving with the cash committed.
Check the actual program
Lexus Financial Services permits up to nine additional deposits under its U.S. program. It excludes New York and cannot be combined with 1Pay. Refunds are reduced by remaining amounts owed, including applicable mileage, wear and disposition charges.
Separate savings from returned cash
Fictional matching quotes: an extra $3,000 deposit reduces each of 36 payments by $25. Assume scheduled completion, full deposit return and all other costs equal. Payment savings are 36 × $25 = $900; returning $3,000 is not another $3,000 of savings.
That $900 ignores forgone earnings or borrowing costs. It is not an annual return or an advertised Lexus offer. Would committing the deposit leave enough accessible cash?
Ask how deposits are handled if the vehicle is totaled; the scheduled-completion example does not establish the answer.
Label each signing amount
Lexus’s glossary distinguishes a refundable security deposit from a capitalized-cost reduction, sometimes called a down payment. The latter reduces the amount used to calculate lease payments; it is not the refundable-deposit line.
Ask for an itemized signing total showing deposits, capitalized-cost reduction, fees, taxes and the first installment separately. Lexus requires the first monthly payment at signing: count it once, not again among later installments.
Read the refund conditions, not just “refundable.” Confirm which unpaid amounts can be deducted and when any balance is returned. A smaller refund may settle charges you otherwise owed; do not automatically count both the deduction and that bill as separate costs.
Before signing, ask how early termination changes your obligations. Keep unresolved charges separate rather than assuming zero. Use your written agreement and matching quotes, not this example, to decide.
