No FICO Score? Check Both Timing Requirements

Different accounts can satisfy FICO’s age and recent-reporting tests.

A missing credit score does not tell you that your score is low. Insufficient or outdated credit history can prevent a score from being produced. Scores also depend on the model, credit-report source and calculation date.

Two timing tests, potentially two accounts

FICO lists three minimum requirements: an account opened at least six months ago; an account reported to the bureau within the past six months; and no deceased indication on the report. A shared account can cause problems if another holder is reported deceased.

One account can satisfy both timing tests, but different accounts in the same file can satisfy them too. Rarely, qualification differs by FICO version.

A fictional file

Assume both accounts appear in one bureau’s file, with no deceased indication.

  • Older account: opened two years ago; last reported eight months ago.
  • Newer account: opened two months ago; last reported last month.

The older account meets the age test; the newer one meets the recent-reporting test. Together they meet those timing minimums. This predicts neither a score nor approval.

Before deciding what to do

Identify the model, bureau and date behind the unavailable score. A score displayed elsewhere may use different inputs. Obtain the underlying credit report rather than treating the dashboard message as a diagnosis. The CFPB links to AnnualCreditReport.com for free reports.

Check opening and reporting dates across the file.

If the message remains unexplained, ask the score provider what prevented calculation before opening another account solely to obtain a score. This example does not evaluate creditworthiness or recommend borrowing.
