Pension Lump Sum or Monthly Income: Check the Offer

Compare pension income, survivor options and payout responsibilities before electing.

For a private-sector pension offer before payments begin, compare the income you would retain with the responsibilities you would take on—not just the lump-sum headline.

Compare lifetime income and control

PBGC’s comparison explains that a pension annuity supplies lifetime income, while a lump sum puts money management and the risk of outliving the funds on you. Unspent lump-sum money may remain for heirs; survivor income under a pension depends on the option selected.

Request the monthly amounts for the available survivor options, not only the highest payment for your own life. Compare essential expenses, other steady income, savings and your ability to manage investments as you age. Ask whether the plan permits a combination of monthly payments and a lump sum.

Pin down the actual offer

Fidelity’s pension-offer guide describes a decision window: accepting the lump sum ends the employer’s pension obligation to you; the cash-out option may disappear after the window closes. Record the election deadline, proposed payment date and monthly-benefit starting date before comparing quotes.

Check inflation protection separately. Fidelity notes that pension payments typically lack inflation adjustments. Ask whether this plan includes increases and how a fixed payment would fit later expenses; do not assume today’s purchasing power lasts.

Verify the numbers before deciding

The CFPB’s pension-payout guide recommends checking the latest pension statement for calculation errors. Verify age, years of service, earnings history and plan terms with the administrator. Request an explanation and corrected quotation for a discrepancy rather than choosing between figures you cannot reconcile.

Check whether the plan has PBGC coverage and which guarantee limits apply. Do not treat the word “pension” as unlimited protection. If someone recommends investing the payout, check credentials, complaint history, commissions and conflicts of interest—not only a projected return.

Before requesting payment, ask a tax professional about direct-rollover eligibility, taxes and any early-distribution exception. The gross offer is not a promise of after-tax spending money. This comparison does not calculate your tax bill or recommend an investment.

Government pensions, 401(k) withdrawals, pension advances and plans already administered by PBGC are outside this offer checklist. Checked October 24, 2026.
