Rent-to-Own: Remaining Purchase Costs

Compare future outlay and available cash.

Two purchase paths.

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

The New York Attorney General describes two rent-to-own purchase routes: completing rental payments or exercising an early-purchase option. Compare money still needed, not advertised weekly payments.

Fictional agreement: ownership requires 40 payments of $30. Ten have been paid, totaling $300. A current written early-purchase quote is $525, additional to those completed payments. Assume no overdue amounts, taxes or other charges.

Continuing requires 30 × $30 = $900 more. Buying now requires $525 more, a $375 reduction in future outlay. Total paid since inception would be $1,200 versus $825. The paid $300 belongs in both lifetime totals, neither future amount.

Check cash timing. With $650 available and $200 reserved for essential bills, only $450 remains for the purchase. The $525 quote leaves a $75 funding gap despite its lower total cost.

Verify the quote’s expiry, ownership transfer and actual agreement. Returning the item, new borrowing and legal eligibility are outside this comparison. Lower total outlay alone does not make immediate purchase affordable.
