FINANCIAL CALCULATORS

Calculators

Use numbers to explore a financial question. These free calculators help U.S. readers compare borrowing costs, plan savings and test everyday money decisions. Each tool comes with its formula, an original chart, worked examples and a guide to interpreting the results.

Start with your own figures. Dollar amounts are in U.S. dollars. The prefilled rates and examples demonstrate the calculations; they aren’t current offers or forecasts. No account or contact details are required to use a calculator.

Get a useful result

  1. Gather the right inputs. Start with the written loan terms, current statement, household budget or actual policy details relevant to the tool. A contractual interest rate and a fee-inclusive APR can be different inputs.
  2. Check the assumptions. Check the note beside the form. Payment timing, compounding, fees, coverage limits and calculation order can change the answer.
  3. Compare scenarios. Change one input at a time to see why the result changes. Keep an affordable budget separate from an attractive mathematical result.
  4. Confirm the real-world terms. These calculators provide estimates. They don’t confirm loan approval, investment returns, insurance coverage or a tax result.

What you’ll find in each guide

Each calculator has a labeled input form, numerical results and an original visual based on those results. Its guide explains the formula, walks through an illustrative example, identifies important exclusions and answers common questions. Tables also make the chart values available in text.

For loans, keep the stated interest rate, payment amount and total borrowing cost distinct. For savings, distinguish a nominal rate from an effective annual yield. For insurance and employer benefits, the contract or plan document determines which assumptions apply.

These tools are for educational planning, not personalized financial, tax, legal or investment advice. Read our editorial policy, explore the financial guides, or report a calculation issue with the inputs and result you want checked. Please leave out account numbers and other sensitive information.
