Medical Collections: Which Balance Counts?

Check the initial and current balances.

A lower balance does not necessarily remove a medical collection.

Check the original amount

TransUnion says its U.S. reports exclude fully paid medical collections and those with an initial reported balance under $500. Unpaid medical collections wait one year from original delinquency; state law may add protections.

Fictional: a medical collection initially reported at $700 is reduced by a $300 payment, leaving $400 unpaid. Its initial reported balance is still $700. The partial payment alone does not establish removal under the under-$500 initial-balance criterion; check the actual report.

Keep card debt separate

Experian distinguishes a later credit-card collection after a medical bill was paid by card from a medical collection. Do not assume identical treatment.

Confirm the account, original and current balances, status and dates. Dispute inaccurate information with the reporting company. A report’s absence does not itself establish that a debt is resolved.
