Returned Purchase, Negative Points?

Separate the credit from points.

A returned U.S. consumer credit-card purchase can affect dollars and rewards points separately.

Trace one fictional return

Suppose a $500 purchase earned 1,000 points. All were redeemed, leaving zero. Later, a $500 card credit and a reversal of 1,000 points both post. With no other activity, rewards become negative 1,000 points.

Do not subtract points from dollars. The card credit may reduce debt; it is not automatically bank cash.

Check your program

Chase describes reversing purchase rewards after returns, including possible negative points after redemption. Program terms and posting times vary. Match the card credit, rewards reversal and redemption records. Ask the issuer about discrepancies and payment requirements. This example establishes neither your balance nor refund rights.
