A missed U.S. 401(k) plan-loan payment can trigger a deemed distribution. Contact your administrator promptly.

Compare dates

Fictional 2026: separate loans compliant when made miss installments due February 15 and April 15. Assume each plan permits the maximum under Treasury’s rule.

February falls in the first quarter, so its maximum ends June 30. April falls in the second quarter, so its maximum ends September 30.

Plan terms

The IRS says a plan may allow a shorter cure period or none. The maximum is not necessarily your deadline. Ask for your deadline, amount and payment method. Keep the agreement and payroll records. This example establishes neither cure nor tax result.
