Replacement Visa Card: Will Subscriptions Continue?

A replacement U.S. Visa credit card doesn’t necessarily stop recurring charges. Visa describes Visa Account Updater: participating issuers supply changes; merchants or acquirers request updates. Neither updates nor payments are guaranteed.

Choose separately for each service

Fictional example: a $12 monthly service is wanted; an $18 subscription is not. One charge of each amount totals $30. Replacing the card alone establishes neither cancellation nor a successful payment.

For the wanted service, confirm its payment method, next due date and whether an update is needed. Check payment and service status. For the unwanted subscription, follow its cancellation instructions and save confirmation and date.

Check the statement

Watch for each charge after replacement. If the canceled subscription still charges you, contact the merchant and issuer promptly. The FTC recommends preserving records and following up in writing at the issuer’s billing-dispute address to protect potential rights. A new number doesn’t settle it.
