Check an alternative request.

Can’t afford a proposed Direct Loan rehabilitation payment? Check the agreement’s objection instructions; contact the holder promptly.

Separate your budget from the official calculation

Fictional example: an offer requests $180 monthly, while your private budget leaves $70 after listed essentials. The $110 gap is not an approved payment.

Under 34 CFR 685.211(f), an eligible borrower who rejects the initial amount can have it recalculated using the approved form and requested documentation, including income and necessary expenses. The new amount is not guaranteed to be lower. Ask the holder for current forms, instructions and deadlines.

Wait for the written result

Federal Student Aid describes the income-and-expense option. A new written rehabilitation agreement requires your acceptance. Compare its amount and dates with your budget; $70 is not an agreement.

Terms and eligibility vary. This guide concerns Direct Loans, not Perkins loans. A request alone does not remove default. Seek qualified help if needed.
