Car Payment: Before Surrender
Compare possible paths.
Estimated reading time: 1 minute
For U.S. auto loans, contact the lender promptly; surrender doesn’t automatically end the debt.
Compare two uncertain paths
Fictional example: a dated payoff is $14,000 and a buyer offers $11,000. If full payoff is required at sale, $3,000 more is needed before other costs. Confirm the payoff date, offer, lien release and costs.
Alternatively, assume voluntary surrender and a later lender sale for $9,000 gross, with $500 of claimed costs and no other changes. The illustrative claimed shortfall is $14,000 + $500 − $9,000 = $5,500. Actual proceeds, costs and enforceability remain unknown.
The FTC warns voluntary return may still leave a deficiency and affect credit. The CFPB suggests asking about payment arrangements and getting any agreement in writing.
