SIMPLE IRA Participation Clock

Compare withdrawal dates.

Additional tax.

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

IRS Publication 560 (2025) raises the usual 10% early-withdrawal additional tax to 25% during the first two years of SIMPLE IRA participation. This measures elapsed participation, not calendar-year labels.

Compare alternative withdrawals

Fictional records establish July 1, 2023 as the first participation date in an employer’s traditional SIMPLE IRA plan. The owner is 45 throughout 2025. Compare two alternative histories, each containing one fully taxable $8,000 cash withdrawal, with no rollover, repayment or additional-tax exception.

  • A: June 30, 2025 remains within two years. Additional tax: $8,000 × 25% = $2,000.
  • B: July 2, 2025 is after two years. Additional tax: $8,000 × 10% = $800.

The difference is $1,200. These are alternatives, not two withdrawals to combine. Reaching the third calendar year did not itself end A’s two-year period.

Check the clock

Verify the participation-start record, distribution date, age and exceptions. Both examples still include $8,000 in income; the additional tax is not the entire tax bill. This comparison does not recommend a withdrawal.
