VA COE: Prepare and Track the Request

Organize your evidence, keep the response with its request and identify the next unanswered question.

A quick reference for getting started.

A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) confirms VA home-loan benefit eligibility for the lender. The lender’s credit, income and property review remains separate. Start with VA’s COE request guidance.

Choose the evidence branch before collecting records

VA lists DD214 discharge papers for veterans and a signed statement of service for active-duty members. Guard and Reserve evidence varies with service history. Follow the matching branch on VA’s page; surviving spouses should use its separate spouse instructions.

Keep one request and its response together

VA offers online requests, possible lender-assisted retrieval, and mail using VA Form 26-1880. Ask whether your lender can help; automatic retrieval is not assured. Check the separate spouse route before choosing a form.

VA’s signed-in COE status service supports reviewing letters, supplying additional evidence and downloading an approved certificate. VA says not to submit another request while the existing one is under review.

Fictional example: a veteran receives a request for clearer discharge evidence. They follow up through the existing request rather than opening a duplicate. Their record remains “awaiting decision.”

Keep service records, Social Security numbers and benefit documents out of public comments and messages to EasyLoanWorld. Provide required evidence only through the appropriate official or lender channel. This educational checklist does not determine personal eligibility or promise financing.
