Prepare an SCRA Interest Request: A Recordkeeping Guide

Organize documents, preserve separate dates and track your creditor’s response.

A useful request folder should let you answer three questions quickly: what did I ask for, what did I send, and what did the creditor say? This guide offers a way to organize that folder. It is a preparation aid, not a comprehensive explanation of the law or a decision about your eligibility.

DOJ guidance describes a 6% annual interest ceiling for qualifying pre-service debt.

Create a date index

Record debt-incurred, orders-issued, orders-received, reporting/service-start, extension and release dates separately. Do not use this worksheet to determine your benefit-start date.

Beside each entry, write the document name and page where you found it. If two documents appear to disagree, preserve both entries and add a question rather than silently choosing one. Keep an unknown field blank. A clean-looking timeline is less useful than an honest record of what still needs checking.

Fictional Alex, assuming qualifying service: debt January 2025; orders issued April 1, 2026, received April 2, 2026; service began May 1, 2026; new debt June 2026. Review January’s debt; June’s is not pre-service.

That example only sorts documents. It assigns no entitlement, start date or refund.

Make the packet easy to retrace

Send written notice with orders or alternative service proof within 180 days after release or termination. You can request during service. See the CFPB guide.

Give each account a private nickname and its own folder. Create a contents list before adding attachments. Number the documents so you can refer to a particular file in a follow-up without describing its whole history. Keep your working notes separate from the files you intend to send.

Find submission instructions on your creditor’s genuine website or account statement. Save a copy of those instructions. Check that the account identifiers in your notice match the documents you have selected, and confirm that every attachment opens. When a document has several pages, make sure the saved copy is complete and readable.

Save the exact submission, its destination, timestamp, receipt or portal confirmation, and reference number. Use filenames that distinguish the sent version from later working copies. Add a reminder to check for a response. These are practical filing suggestions, not additional legal documentation requirements.

Keep a short follow-up list

Compare requested and confirmed dates, rate, adjustments and payment.

For each unanswered question, note the document that prompted it and the part of the response that appears relevant. A short list is easier to work through than several messages repeating the whole story. If the reply refers to a missing attachment or unexplained calculation, ask the creditor to identify it clearly.

Store subsequent replies in order, alongside your original request. A simple communication log can record the date, channel, reference number and next step from each exchange. If a phone conversation resolves a point, ask for written confirmation so your folder remains usable later.

Ask military legal assistance about disputed dates or coverage. Do not reduce payments yourself while awaiting a response.

Keep orders, account numbers and service records in your own secure files. Send required evidence only through your verified creditor or appropriate official channel. Do not upload it to EasyLoanWorld or post it in comments.
