ABLE Distributions Across Month-End

Separate retained purposes.

Retained distributions.

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

SSA’s ABLE guidance treats retained housing distributions differently from retained distributions for nonhousing qualified disability expenses when counting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) resources.

Separate retained amounts

Fictional June distributions from a valid ABLE account total $1,500: $600 intended for rent and $900 for a verified nonhousing qualified assistive-technology expense. Both remain unspent and identifiable in checking at July’s first moment. The beneficiary maintains the ABLE account and both intended uses remain unchanged.

The $600 housing distribution counts as a July resource. The $900 nonhousing distribution remains excluded while the required conditions hold. Neither distribution is SSI income when received.

Suppose checking also contains $1,800 of otherwise countable cash, with no other exclusions. Its balance is $1,800 + $1,500 = $3,300, but its countable portion is $1,800 + $600 = $2,400.

Keep purpose evidence

Preserve distribution dates, intended expenses and identifiable unspent balances. A qualified expense label alone does not exclude retained housing cash. This isolates checking-account resources, not total resources, SSI eligibility, taxes or benefit payments.
